Dryer Vent Cleaning

So you have 4 kids, a husband and Grandma’s laundry to do today. Just as you load your freshly washed seemingly endless bounty of clothing…..your dryer isn’t working! After cursing the dryer gods you have emptied the lint tray, kicked it and called the hubby. All too often this happens and when it does, it is truly frustrating. More often than not it is because as all large electrical equipment it requires maintenance. The leading cause of both house fires as well as dryer failure is lack of cleaning your vents. Aside from obvious causes of lung issues and breathing difficulties this poses a threat within your household. Have no fear! These are all issues that can be thwarted by simply taking the necessary steps to ensure that your dryer venting system is both clean and working efficiently. Many households believe that simply emptying the lint within the dryer will keep you going. Unfortunately this is not the case. We will venture into the reasons that this is not adequate enough to keep your family healthy, your heat and air bills affordable and safe guarding your home.

Ever been a victim of the ever looming “sock monster”? We all have at some point or another. Among socks many items can be left in pockets, mixed in with the laundry or maybe your toddler decided he needed to wash his crayons. As you can imagine, this is quite frustrating. Lots of items can cause damage to the dryer vent and it’s operations. Leaving you with the daunting task of air drying or venturing to the nearest laundry facility. This is certainly when Dryer maintenance and vent cleaning becomes imperative.
On average, dryer vents should be cleaned and inspected at least once a year. More if you have a lot of laundry traffic in your home. A good indication of when it’s time to have them inspected for maintenance is when you begin to see that your clothing may be taking longer and longer to dry. Also another sign is if the dryer’s external cabinet is obstructed making the control area higher in temperature than normal. If this happens, disconnect the dryer completely until properly inspected. This brings us to our next point. SAFETY.
Dryer vents accumulate highly flammable lint and debris. Some of which you cannot see. Failure to properly clean your lint trap and dryer vents can be a statistic in the leading cause of house fires according to the National Fire Protection Agency. Over 15,000 fires occurred in the US in 2016. A clogged dryer vent can also burn through the heating element causing the dryer to potentially give up all together, costing much more than simply having a professional provide the proper maintenance and cleaning required to keep your machine working properly. In this case it also matters whether you have a gas burning or electric dryer.Gas dryers can be a huge Carbon Monoxide risk if not properly maintained. Carbon Monoxide is colorless, odorless, and tasteless making it very difficult to detect. This is potentially deadly if ingested. Inadequately cleaned dryer vents can be obstructed and prevent exhaust fumes from properly exiting the ventilation line. Instead, harmful gases build up and create risk of fire and poisoning. Who doesn’t want clean, dry clothes after all? I know I do!
